Amos Murphy

Amos Murphy, 95, of Edgarton, WV, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017 at his residence. He was born September 19, 1921 in Lindsey, WV, a son of the late Bill & Sarah Pack Murphy.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, five sisters, and one grandson: Van Curtis Murphy.

Amos was a retired coal miner, having worked for the Majestic Collieries & Kentland Elkhorn for 33 years, and was a member of the UMWA.  He was the manager of the Majestic Coalfield Baseball League, and during his time as manager, his team won several nice trophies in tournaments.  He was recently presented with a plaque for being the oldest member of the League.  Amos was a Christian man of the Church of Christ faith.  He was a hunter and fisherman, who also enjoyed gardening, and his flowers.  He always looked forward to the annual camping trip back to his hometown with his friends & family.

In addition to  his wife of 74 years, Jean Mounts Murphy, he is survived by two sons: Larry (Vanda) Murphy of Mooresburg, TN, James (Janice) Murphy of Looneyville, WV;  one daughter: Hazel (Nick) Frazier of Paintsville, KY; seven grandchildren:  David Murphy, Mark Murphy, Michelle Stumbo, Alan Bradley Frazier, Daniel Layne Frazier, Bryan Foster Frazier, & Michael Murphy; twelve great-grandchildren: Tyler, Kaylee, Kayci, Katie, Kaden, Ashley, Sydney, Morgan, Stephen, Channing, Anna Carol, & Matthew, along with many nieces, nephews, friends & family to mourn his passing.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 P.M.  Thursday, June 8th at the Jones & West Funeral Home, Phelps, KY with Reverends Roger Murphy & Steve Spurlock officiating, and special words by Tom Varney.

Burial will follow at the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy, KY with grandsons acting as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
