Cotton Michael

Charles Avis “Cotton” Michael, 81, of Phelps, KY, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at his residence.  Born September 3, 1935 in Feds Creek, KY, he was a son of the late Austin & Lakie “Overbee” Michael.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Glenda Gaye Michael; two daughters: Laura Michael, Susan Michael Hunt; one brother; and two sisters. 

Cotton was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during the Korean War, and was a member of the VFW Post 10922, Phelps, KY.  He enjoyed showing up to the Phelps JROTC and offering advice to the cadets.  He was retired coal miner, having worked for Chisholm Coal, and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.  Cotton was also a member of the Peter Creek Presbyterian Church, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.  Back in the 70’s, he was a baseball coach for Phelps grade school.  Cotton enjoyed coaching & helping young people achieve their goals.  His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, & trying to “steal Roy’s tomato”.  While his health permitted him to drive, Cotton enjoyed socializing at the Phelps Post Office, Double Quick, and Citizen’s Drug.  His strong presence and humble personality leaves memories that will always be cherished by his family & friends.

Survivors include two sons: Jerry Darrel (Janet) Michael of Ronceverte, WV, Barry (Theresa) Michael of Phelps, KY; one daughter: Tina (Darrell) Maynard of Phelps, KY; seven grandchildren; and several brothers, sisters, & great-grandchildren.  Cotton is also survived by a host of family & friends. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps, KY with Reverend Rob Musick officiating.  Military Rites will be conducted by DAV Chapter 141, Belfry, KY, followed by burial in the Charles Family Cemetery, Phelps, KY. 

Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
