Herbert Sullivan, 86, of Phelps, KY, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in Phelps. He was born July 30, 1929 in Pike County, KY, the son of the late Burley & Pricey Blankenship Sullivan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son: Gregory Kenny “Slick” Sullivan; and one sister: Sadie Whitt.


He was a retired coal miner, having worked 28 years for Potters Coal Company in Elkhorn City, KY; and was a former bus driver for Phelps High School. Herb was a member of The Lord’s House at Freeburn, KY. He enjoyed doing lawnmower repair work for people and giving bags of candy to people in the community, many of who referred to him as “the candy man”.


Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years: Georgia Young Sullivan; sons: Clifford Sullivan of Thomasville, NC & Gary Sullivan of Stopover, KY; daughters: Ollie Daniels of Pikeville, KY, Penny Blankenship of Stopover, Sherry Hurley & Kimberly Hamilton, both of Phelps; grandchildren: Donna, Venisa, Kelli, Katie, Alisa, Nicole, Kari, Ryan, Dalton, Mark, Garrett, Truson, Dakota, & a grandson he raised: Verlin. He also leaves behind five great grandchildren and a host of family & friends to mourn his passing.


Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Saturday, January 16, 2016 at The Lord’s House, Freeburn, KY with Reverends Mitch Bowling & Chris Casey officiating.
Burial will follow in the Young Cemetery, Mill Creek, VA with friends & family serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Thursday at the church with special services at 7:00 P.M. Friday evening.


Arrangements are under the direction of the Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps, KY. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to assist with funeral expenses.
