William Allyn “Bill” Brooks, 64, of McAndrews, KY, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018 at his residence of an apparent heart attack. He was born September 23, 1954 in Williamson, WV, a son of the late George Wheeler and Jeanette Hackney Brooks. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife: Azzie Brooks; his grandparents: Morgan & Fannie Hackney; and one sister: Phyllis Brooks.
Bill was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Marine Corps and was a Hydraulics Mechanic on AV8A Harrier jets. He flew to England to work on the last AV8A Harrier to be manufactured. Bill worked for Norfolk & Western Railroad as a conductor and brakeman for 17 years. He was also a well-known bass player & bluegrass musician in the area who has helped many families in need throughout the years by organizing bluegrass benefit shows. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Marine Corps League. Bill enjoyed conversation about his grandson William George, as well as the USMC, music, and railroading. He was a great man, love him or hate him. A Marine through & through.
Those left to cherish his memory include one son: George Simon (Tonya) Brooks of McAndrews, KY; one daughter: Amanda Brooks (Sam Jonas) of McAndrews, KY; three brothers: George David Brooks of Dayton, OH, his twin brother: Robert Brooks of Frankfort, KY, Dwight (Mary) Wolford of Mount Vernon, OH; sister: Janice Clarke of Louisville, KY; and the light in his heart, his grandson: William George Brooks of McAndrews, KY.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Tuesday February 20, 2018 at Octavia Freewill Baptist Church with reverends Ersel Bowman & Dwayne Yates officiating.
Burial will follow in the Brooks Family Cemetery with family & friends serving as pallbearers.
Military honors will be conducted by DAV Chapter 141 Belfry, KY.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Monday at the church.
