Bertha “Birdie” Stevens Irick, 71, of Phelps, KY, passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Pikeville Medical Center. She was born April 9, 1947 in Phelps, KY, a daughter of Dixie Hurley Stevens & the late Hubert Stevens. In addition to her father, Birdie was also preceded in death by her husband: Everett Irick; one sister: Sheryl Stevens; and one son: William Irick.
Birdie was a retired school teacher having been employed by the Pike County Board of Education for 24 years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of Biggs Church of God and attended there until her failing health made it difficult to travel. In recent times, she attended Phelps Freewill Baptist Church. Birdie was a loving wife to Everett, and at the time of his passing, had this to say about their time together, “Everett taught me the true meaning of love, a special bond we shared that was the foundation of our 37 years of marriage.” Now reunited with loved ones who have gone on before, Birdie leaves a legacy of love for friends & family to be treasured for many years to come.
Those Birdie leaves to cherish her memory include her mother: Dixie Stevens of Phelps, KY; three sons: Sammy (Glenda) Stevens of Phelps, KY, Mike (Michelle) Irick of Lick Creek, KY, Jamie (Traci) Irick of Hindman, KY; two daughters: Kym King of Paducah, KY, Venita (Terry) Dotson of Cynthiana, KY; brothers: Kenneth (Geri) Stevens, Jimmy (Helen) Stevens, Donald (Ola) Stevens, all of Phelps, KY; two sisters: Vivian (Charlie) Ferrell of Charlotte, North Carolina, Shelva (Henry) Layne of Freeburn, KY; nine grandchildren: Cyeria (Tyler) Story, Matt (Ashleigh) Irick, Mika (Brandon) Ratliff, Teresa Irick, Jerrod Irick, Haylee Stevens, Kara Stevens, Ashley Smith, Alesha Fletcher; three great-grandchildren: Trip & Kadyn Story, Shyanne Irick; and a host of family & friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the Jones & West Funeral Home with reverend Frank Layne officiating.
Burial will follow in the Sanders Cemetery, Phelps, KY with family & friends serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin 6:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home with special singing at 7:00 P.M.
