Leon Keith “Jap-eye” Layne 74, of Phelps, Kentucky passed away October 17th, 2022, at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky. He was born in Phelps, Kentucky on December 23, 1947, to the late Jessie James and Madaline “Preece” Layne. In addition to his parents, Leon was also preceded in death by a brother, Martin Layne and sister, Brenda Coleman.
Leon enjoyed the simple things in life. Most knew him as “Jap-eye”. He loved taking care of his horses. He liked to ride motorcycles and play a good card game with his friends. Leon will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Della “Adkins” Layne. Son, Leon Keith Layne Jr., and his wife Crystal; daughter, Keithella “Layne” Matney and her husband, Steve of Phelps, KY; brothers, Gary (Sue) Layne of Phelps, Ky; James (Joyce) Layne of Surgeonsville, TN; sisters, Sandy (Bill) Adkins; Paulette Flagg of Church Hill, TN; Gail Diamond of Cynthiana, Ky; and Fayetta Fletcher of Kimper, Ky. Four grandchildren, Keisha “Matney” Hatfield, Colby Keith Layne, Keirah Faith Layne, and Jessica LaShae Rowe.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, October 20th, 2022, at the Jones & West Funeral Home in Phelps, Ky. with pastor Mitch Bowling officiating. Interment will follow at Fletcher and Layne family cemetery in Kimper, Ky. Friends and family will serve as Pallbearers.
