Robert Daugherty Obituary

With sadness we announce the passing of Robert Daugherty, age 93, of Freeburn, Kentucky, on March 15th, 2025, at his residence.

Robert was born in Jamboree, Kentucky, on June 26th, 1931, a son of the late Howard & Sadie “Fields” Daugherty.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded by his first wife, Ruth Keene Hatfield Daugherty, two brothers, Jack & Jim Daugherty, three sisters, Dale Casey, Mag Hager, and Ethel Moore, two grandsons, Christopher Pugh and Billy Craig Irick, and two son-in-laws, Billy Joe Irick, and Doyle Baker.

Robert was a coal miner retiring from Chisholm Coal Company and a member of the U.M.W.A Local 1511.  He worked various other jobs throughout his life from owning and operating a sawmill, doing backhoe work, building houses, and on to maintenance at Good Shepherd Nursing Home later in life. He believed there was value in a good day of work and never let an opportunity pass by to be outside. He enjoyed being outdoors. Whether it was gardening or just taking care of his animals, he did everything with a smile. He was known for being kind and helping someone who was in need. Just ask anyone who ever stopped by “the shop” as he called it. He was of the Pentecostal faith and when health permitted, he enjoyed attending Faith Mission Church of McCarr, KY.

Those surviving Robert includes his cherished wife, Carolyn Daugherty of Freeburn, KY; children, James (Geri) Hatfield, of Phelps, KY, Barbara (Mark) Smith of Springfield, Ohio, Doris Jean Irick, of Phelps, KY, Bonnie (William) Thornsbury of Kimper, KY, Wilma (Terry) Pugh of Phelps, KY, Johnny (Connie) Daugherty, of Lexington, KY, Danny (Angela) Sullivan, Valerie Baker, Dana (Tim) Sellars, and Jody Hill and her companion Jay Watts; and one sister, Inis Belcher Prater.

Robert was the proud Papaw of Billy Irick, Valerie (Larry) Stevens, Kyle Pugh, Bobby (Lynn) Hatfield, Ricky Hatfield, Matthew (Angela) Thornsbury, Sonja Thompson, Aaron (Brittany) Daugherty, Josh (Melissa) Baker, DJ Sullivan, Jordan Casey, Keaton (Brittany) Baker, Tiffany (Tyler) Burrow, Rodney (Erica) Hill, and Cody Sullivan; 22 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
