Roy Roger “Shotgun” Hurley, 62, of Stopover, KY, was called home to be with the Lord on September 6, 2025, at Pikeville Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Born May 29, 1963, at home in Stopover, KY, he was the son of the late Joseph E. Hurley and Pearlie Blankenship Hurley.
Roy worked as a coal miner until an injury in 1985, at the young age of 21, left him paralyzed. Despite this challenge, he never allowed his injury to define him or stop him from living life to the fullest. He had a passion for CB radio, where he was known as “Shotgun” to friends all over the world. He enjoyed horses, riding UTVs, operating heavy machinery, and creating leatherwork such as horse bridles, belts, and dog collars.
Most of all, Roy was a man of faith. A devoted prayer warrior of the Holiness faith, his love for God guided every step of his life. His kindness, laughter, and unshakable faith touched countless lives and will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant sister, Myrtle Hurley, and his brother, Raymond Hurley.
He is survived by his son, Roger Wayne Hurley of Stopover, KY; three brothers, Richard (Rebecca Sue) Hurley of Varney, WV, Randall Hurley and Glen Elbert Hurley both of Georgetown KY; four sisters, Irene (Charles) Sturgeon of Stopover, KY, Mary Ann Hurley of Stopover, KY, Joann (Randy) Mounts of Hurley, VA, and Cinda (Michael) Blankenship of Stopover, KY. He also leaves behind nephews Jackie Sturgeon, Billy Hunt, Joseph Hurley, Brandon Hunt, Dylan Deskins, JD Hurley, Keaton Sturgeon, and Michaeljo Blankenship; nieces Monica Cline, Mandi Phelps, Cynthia Hurley, and Angel Blankenship; along with many great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
To Roy, Charles and Michael were more than brothers-in-law, they were truly his brothers in every way. His brothers and sisters were not just his family, but his very best friends, always standing by him with love, support, and strength throughout his life.
Visitation will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, September 9th, & 10th, 2025 at Jones & West Funeral Home in Phelps, KY. Family visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by public visitation from 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Special words will be shared by his uncle, Lora Blankenship, and his brother-in-law, Randy Mounts. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
