Sammy Douglas Charles

Sammy Douglas Charles, 81, of Phelps, KY, passed away Friday, January 3, 2025, at his
residence. Sammy was born December 23, 1943, to the late Claude Charles and Bertha (Tootsie) Maynard Charles. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley Charles and Danny Charles; two sisters, Helen (Hassel) Trent and Monica (George) Jackson; and his stepdaughter, Veronica Blankenship.

Sammy was a hard worker, having many jobs during his life but he truly loved being a coal
miner. In his free time, he loved to work on old cars and Chevrolet trucks. Sammy was a loving father and proud grandfather as he was always talking about his “babies”.

He leaves behind two daughters, Treva Charles and Melissa (Buford Jr.) Combs, stepdaughter, Monica (Martin) Blankenship; five grandchildren, Justin Combs, LaTosha (Payton) Ratliff, Shay Spears, BJ McClanahan, and McGarrett Fields; nine great- grandchildren, Baylee and Karson Combs, Colton and Maicy Ratliff, Sydney and Lori Johnson, Gabriella, Serenity, and McGarrett Dean Fields II; two sisters, Bonetta (Tommy Ray) McClanahan, and Claudette Pyszkowski; a sister-in-law, Lucille Charles; and a special friend, Chris Dotson and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. on January 16th, 2025 at the Jones & West Funeral Home located at 37035 State Highway 194 East, Phelps, Kentucky .  

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on January 17th, 2025 in the chapel with Pastor Opie Harris officiating.  

Burial will follow at the Combs Cemetery in Phelps, Kentucky with friends and family serving as Pallbearers.
