Dottie Lou (Stroud) Stanley

January 27, 1934 ~ November 21, 2016 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Dottie Lou Stanley, 82, of Hardy, KY, was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 21, 2016 at Pikeville Medical Center.  She was born January 27, 1934 in Ragland, WV, a daughter of the late Minis Wirt Stroud Sr. & Peggy Ellen Williams Stroud.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: John J. “Dude” Stanley; four brothers: Clayton, Rush, Ozzie, & Joe Stroud; six sisters: Eloise Bowling, Peggy Alderman, Linda Gail Alderman, Bobby Jean Evans, Rael Stroud, & Lena Dillon.

Dottie was a homemaker and former mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.  She was also an avid bluegrass & gospel music fan.  She loved going to bluegrass festivals and was a regular at the South Side Mall’s weekend music shows.  She will be fondly remembered by the local bluegrass community as a member of the “Dancing Grannies”, a group of ladies who attended local bluegrass events & delighted the audience with their clogging & tap dancing.  Dottie also enjoyed collecting jewelry and playing the upright bass.

She was a kind, loving, caring, and strong woman who never gave up.  She loved her children and grandchildren & always wanted the best for them.

Dottie was saved when she was 11 years old, having been given an old-fashioned creek baptism by Reverend Compton at Hell Creek, WV.  She was a member of the Toler Freewill Baptist Church and attended Borderland Missionary Baptist Church.  Dottie leaves us with these words: “When your time comes, His hand touches you, and no more pain do you feel, only peace.”

Survivors include one son: Joe Stanley of Hardy, KY; two daughters: Deborah Lou Brooks & Marie Stanley, both of Hardy; two brothers: Minis Stroud Jr, John (Elda) Stroud, both of Columbus, OH; three grandchildren: Andrew Varney (Lora) of Ashland, KY, Jason Varney of Pine Top, AZ, and Craig Varney of Hardy, KY; five great-grandchildren: Rebecca Ellen, Allison, Cole, John, & Jack; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family & friends.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Borderland Missionary Baptist Church, Borderland, WV with services conducted at 7:00 P.M. by Revs. Rick Gannon & Randy Thacker.  Joe Moore will provide singing & Donald Stroud will speak.  In honor of Dottie’s wishes, cremation will take place after the visitation, and a memorial service will be held at a later date, pending arrival of family from out-of-town.
