Russell "Saphead" Dotson

Russell “Saphead” Dotson, 70, of Hurley, VA, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2017 at his residence.  He was born May 6, 1947 in Matewan, WV, a son of the late McKinley and Dollie (Mounts) Dotson.  In addition to his parents, Russell was also preceded in death by his son: David Walter Dotson; three brothers: Thurman “Dave” Dotson, Elzie Dotson, and Luther Coleman; five sisters: Fronia Hurley, Gladys Fisher, Dora Hunt, Pearly and Sylvia Dotson.

Russell was a member of the Upper Elk Creek Freewill Baptist Church.  He was a retired coal miner, having worked for Virginia Energy for 33 years.  In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, tending beehives, working with wood, and riding motorcycles, four-wheelers, & horses.  More than anything, Russell enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Diana Hurley Dotson of Hurley, VA; one daughter: Joann (Bobby) Hunt of Hurley, VA; daughter in law: Brandie Dotson (Larry Hensley) of Hardy, KY; one sister: Juanita Dowdy of Hurley, VA; two grandsons: Steven Ryan (Kayla) Hunt of Hurley, VA & Tristan Myles Dotson of Hardy, KY; one granddaughter: Tyann McKenna Dotson of Hardy, KY; and one great-grandson: Zander Ryan Hunt.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Jones & West Funeral Home with Reverend Ervin Dotson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Dotson Cemetery, Upper Elk Creek with family & friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Monday at Jones & West Funeral Home with special services beginning at 7:00 P.M.

The family would like to extend a special "Thank you!" to Becky Casey & staff of Legacy Hospice, Dr. J.G. Patel, and staff of Buchanan General Hospital & Pikeville Medical Center for their kind & professional care.
